Trump claims US economy will thrive without Canada: “We don’t need them”
Addressing his country’s northern neighbour, U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday, “Canada has been very tough to deal with over the years and it's not fair that we should have a $200-250 billion deficit.” The comments came amid tensions between the U.S. and Canada, after Trump laid out threats of 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian goods – weeks prior to his return to the Oval Office on Jan. 20. Backing his beliefs that his economy can thrive without Canadian assistance, Trump said, “We don't need them to make our cars, and they make a lot of them. We don't need their lumber because we have our own forests. we don't need their oil and gas. We have more than anybody.” If the Republican leader decides to impose tariffs on Canada, and several other countries, he claims motions to do so will begin Feb. 1.
