Ontario will “react hard” if Trump goes through with 25% aluminum and steel tariffs, Ford warns
Speaking in Oakville on Monday, Ontario PC leader Doug Ford spoke about protecting the province against tariffs threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump. Though tariffs initially set to come into play at the beginning of the month were put on a 30-day pause after Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came to an agreement pertaining to Canada’s border security efforts, Trump went against that deal on Sunday, announcing further 25 per cent tariffs to be imposed on steel and aluminum Monday afternoon. Addressing this, Ford said Ontario will “react hard” and “react fast” – but only after they see what Trump’s threats entail. “First of all, let's find out what he's proposing at 1 p.m.,” he said. And despite his willingness to fight constant economic pressure from Trump, Ford urged Trudeau – after seven days of silence – to name Canada’s “fentanyl czar today” in order to mitigate the threat of tariffs. Canada has to “act when it's the right thing to do, and protect our borders, making our communities more safe,” Ford said.
