Global National: Jan. 19, 2025 | Hostages released as Gaza ceasefire brings end to months of war
The first three hostages were released from Hamas custody early Sunday, as a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect. Aid is now flowing into Gaza and Palestinians are finally able to return home – but for a moment it seemed as if it might not happen. Jeff Semple reports from Tel Aviv on a day filled with anxiety, tensions and relief. Chrystia Freeland officially launched her campaign to become the next Liberal Party leader and prime minister of Canada on Tuesday. The event was interrupted by protesters who loudly voiced frustrations and some even stormed the stage. Mackenzie Gray explains. Meanwhile, another Liberal candidate made her pitch for the party’s top job on Sunday. At 37, Government House Leader Karina Gould is the youngest contender, and, as Global’s Touria Izri reports, she’s considered a rising star in the Liberal Party. With the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas now in effect, Gazans are finally able to return to what’s left of their homes. Journalists on the ground are now also able to access the area and share images of places that were – until today – mostly cut off. Mike Armstrong reports.
