Baltic states celebrate switch to EU power grid, cutting ties with Russia and Belarus

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania officially switched their electricity systems to the European Union’s (EU) continental power grid Sunday, just one day after cutting decades-old energy ties to Russia and Belarus. “Today, history is made,” President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said during a press conference in Vilnius, Lithuania. “These chains of power lines linking you to hostile neighbours will be a thing of the past. This is freedom. Freedom from threats. Freedom from blackmails,” she added. Not only a move to enhance the Baltic nations’ energy connectivity and security, but the new synchronization is expected to enhance their ties and relations with the EU. The Baltic Sea region – along with Sweden and Finland – has been on high alert for months after consistent power cables, telecom links and gas pipeline outages due to severe cable damage. Though they have denied any involvement, Russia is believed to be responsible for the damage, after ships allegedly dragged anchors along the Baltic seabed following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
