“Stop the UCP” protesters rally against Alberta’s transgender youth legislation

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the steps of the Alberta legislature on Saturday to rally against three pieces of controversial legislation tabled by Premier Danielle Smith's government that will impact the transgender community. The bills call for policies to govern the ability of student under 16 to change names and pronouns at school, prevent doctors from providing transgender treatments to teens under 16, and ban transgender women and girls from competing in female-only sports. Rally organizers, who staged the protest as the same as the annual general meeting of the United Conservative Party (UCP), say believe the policies promote fear and misinformation and will fuel hatred and violence toward the community. The Alberta government says the legislation will preserve choice for minors, strengthen relationships between parents and kids, and protect fairness and safety in sports.
